Familiar Farmland

Three days ago I cycled accross the dutch border into the province of Groningen in the northern part of the Netherlands. Riding along the busy highway A7 made me realise that this is quite a busy country...

After a quick stop at the Faroe Islands  I arrived in Hirtshals with the Norrana Ferry from Iceland. This was great especially because my family was giving me a warm welcome at the harbour! We spend a nice long weekend at a summerhouse. Too much to tell and quite overwhelming. It was so good to see them again I totally lost my motivation for the last 1000 kilometers home.

The weather was just horrible, too much rain, a neverending headwind, some cold nights and familiar and unexciting farmland. I felt pretty lonely on these days. Wo ist die Bahnhof? This was offcourse never a real option. Are you really going to give up in the last kilometers? "Don't be such a pussy" I told myself and decided to keep going. Singing and talking in german kept  me busy!

It feels good to be back home again and I still have a lot to do right now, sorting all the pictures, cleaning the bike, clothing (and myself). I definitely need a haircut...

I really would like to thank all the nice people who helped me along the way, providing me me food, shelter, interesting conversations and so on. You're all very welcome in Holland.

The Last Pass

I arrived in Seyðisfjördur today over the last pass off this tour...
From 30m to 600m and down to sealevel again. Not the biggest but a memorable one! Sigarette well deserved. (I finally figured out the "zelfontspanner" on my camera).

The Moon

Only 200km away from my final destination in Iceland and 35km from reaching 20000km on the trip I decided to take some time off from cycling in Myvatn. I´ve been doing a lot of "nordic walking" the last couple of days through some amazing scenery. This is the moon! There is totally nobody around here at this time of the year and it´s very quiet in the guesthouse. Good to relax for a bit...

The wind has been very strong the last couple of days riding. Some days I couldn´t go any faster than 10km/h. But worth it once again. I think as far as scenery goes Iceland his simply the best on the tour. Better to leave you guys some pictures, it says more than words (but the real thing is even better offcourse). Thanks for the support people and I´m looking forward to see
everybody at home again.

A new definition of "Steep"

I have been quite lucky with the weather. Nice sunshine but very cold during the nights. The detour to the Snæfellsjokull, a glacier on a peninsula in the west was though cycling and going up there involved a lot of walking. But again, worth it...

Something I really had to do after that was taking the ferry to the West Fjords peninsula, not that I couldnt have cycled it, but it was an old ferry which used to run to the Islands where I am from in the Netherlands!
For me it was hilarious because "Rederij Doeksen" made sure the Icelanders run it the way they wanted to!
Same colours on the boat and even a lot of the signage was still in dutch....

The west fjords where really nice after to, but man it is desolated here! Not a lot of towns so stocking up food is quite important. Cycling there was going to 500m from sea level and down again, and doing the same thing a couple of times more on nice gravel roads...
I am currently in Holmavik having a rest day... It is freezing in the mountains...

I´ve been in Iceland for about a week now and the scenery here is just incredible! I decided to do a small tour inland first over a rough 4x4 track. It simply was one of the most beautiful and most demanding days of riding on the trip. It´s out of this world. But, very challenging too, especially the weather can be tough. Lots of cold rain and cool temperatures at night. At þingveillir I almost didnt sleep during the night. That´s why I think I´m a little bit sick right now.

Good to take a day off in Bogarnes, they have a store here... Taking a lot of food with you is quite important. Not a lot of things to get here. But so far everything has been totally worth it...

Nova Scotia, last stretch to Halifax

Two days ago I arrived in Nova Scotia, the last province for me in Canada. I cycled for about a week together with Chris Prior from Toronto. It was good for a change to ride with someone else and make stupid jokes. We made it through Quebec and New Brunswick. Nice cycling but nothing special since I'm getting a little bit spoiled with scenery every once in a while. Quebec was amazing for touring with lots of bike lanes everywhere!

I'm so happy to be on the coast again. Enough inland country for me. I never seen so much trees in my whole life. I still have quite some time in Canada since my flight to Iceland will be leaving on september the 6th. I'm gonna enjoy the coast and prepare myself in Halifax for a little bit colder weather. Some cycling parts have already been sent to Iceland by de vakantiefietser , excelent service.  I'm wondering how I will manage there without Tim Hortons... Yes, I'm addicted now...

I'm currently staying at the eldest son's house of the family i met in Conquest Saskatchewan. It's now time to upload some pictures and videos from the trip! Enjoy....

Singing Kum Ba Yaaaaaa in Halstad, Minnesota where I camped in a park. The local church had there monthly picnic there, lots of burgers (but that's obvious).

Crossing time zones screws up your sleep pattern. Instead of waking up at 6, I start to wake up at 7...

Changing Directions

Not too long ago I decided to make a new plan for my trip. I didn't really feel like going to New York anymore. Lots of "big city cycling", which I'm not very keen on. I crossed into Canada again and the new destination is Halifax, Nova Scotia. It has been a good decicion so far becaus now I'm enjoying the canadian hospitality again! I camped in the garden of a nice family in McKerrow. I got a private Johnny Cash concert there! I also took a very nice day off at Taggart Lake, free laundry at the campground and very good people for cyclists like me. There is so much enthousiasm!

The roads have been pretty busy the last days. There was a civic holiday in Ontario which meant that the roads where packed with campers, 4x4 and lots of trailers! The number 17 doesn't have much of a shoulder so a lot of vehicles got the finger! I better buy a helmet one of these days...
Anyway, a little 2000km to go to the coast. I'm looking forward to that! Unable to upload any pictures, maybe later... I'm on my way now, there's a bicycle waiting for me outside!

Hey guys, small update from the road. I'm currently in Ashland Wisconsin, USA. Last weeks I pedalled trhough South Dakota (nice prairies again). Then I entered Minnesota, they have trees there which were good for a change. Not so many spectaculair things to see but the people are nice (and big). Today I'm making for Michigan and it will be another couple of days ridin' to the Canadian border again. I'm taking this route to avoid big cities like Detroit. Even I Duluth I accidently ended up on the freeway! After a couple of miles the cops kicked me off but luckily I was not fined! "Respect my authority"! Anyway, I'm still going strong and I'm really "gonna giv'r"! Sorry no pics but I didnt take many exciting foto's anyway. As the crow flies 1543km to New York. I'm at 14985km right now.

Rockies and Prairies

Since I've been meeting so many people on the road I decided to write my blog in english. The writing might not be the best but I give it a go anyway! Enjoy!

Near Kicking Horse Pass 

The last weeks I made my way through the rockies which were amazing. I think it has been one of the better mountain ranges so far on the tour. Especially the wildlife was great, cycling out of Lake Louise I saw 4 Grizzlies on one day, and I finally have proof! Cycling in the rockies is quite easy since the highways don't have very steep gradients for the big trucks but the climbs can be long. The weather has been really good to me with just a few showers. I'll let the pictures do the talking....

Bear Proof

After the mountains I decided to make some progress accros the prairies. This turned out to be very easy with a tailwind but one day it was driving me crazy with a strong headwind. On days like this it can be very lonely but there will always be a nice day coming. I took a route around Calgary towards Drumheller which had some interesting rock formations. The prairies are a lot more enjoyable than I expected. The way the clouds are forming here is very cool and everything is so open. But the muskietos are horrible this year because there was a lot of rain.

Prairies

Two day's ago I arrived in Outlook, which is a small town in Saskatchewan. I met Chantrie and Jared and they offered me a camping spot in the backyard of Jareds parents house at the lovely town "Conquest". Pat made very good cocktails and the next day we celebrated Canada Day at Lake Diefenbaker with some nice watersports! It's so nice to meet wonderfull people like them.

Trans Canada Highways

Tjonge jonge wat was het een gedoe om op het vliegtuig naar Canada te raken. Ik had een one-way ticket gekocht in Tokyo maar dat was niet voldoende! Ik moest een return ticket boeken volgens Air Canada! Daar had ik niet zoveel zin an... Ambassade gebeld in Tokio en die hebben me op het vliegtuig gekregen. In Vancouver was het een beetje bijkomen van de reis en niet veel van de stad gezien. Er zijn erg veel daklozen op straat in Vancouver. Tijdens de Olympics hadden ze deze mensen afgevoerd naar een eiland.

De volgende dag op pad. Er zijn hier ongelofelijk veel fietsers aan het touren. Na een paar dagen Chris en Amy uit Toronto ontmoet waar ik nu een beetje mee opfiets. Dit heeft als resultaat belachelijk korte dagafstanden maar Canada is prachtig! Er is nog sneeuw op de bergen en de bear-count staat nu op 3. Pinnen gaat bij de drive-in en koffie is prima bij Tim Hortons, de goedkope canadese variant van Starbucks.

Gisteren via een onverharde Logroad een prachtige fietsdag gehad. Veel vlinders en Maple Leafs.

Japan / Level 2

Na Kyoto heb ik een mooie Warp Zone gevonden die me direct in de bergen bracht. Ik heb veel gekampeerd voor gratis. Het slagje door de alpen is goed bevallen. Kamigochi was echt geweldig! Door een tunneltje met 11% omhoog naar een afgelegen vallei. Hier heb ik samen met een fransman die ik de dag eerder had ontmoet een nachtje gekampeerd. Veel jappanners met zeer professionele cameras. Als ze iets doen hier dan doen ze het goed en met totale overgave. Veel oooohhhs en aaaahhhs dat ik op de fiets was. Erg grappig volkje hierzo. De volgende ochtend waren er op de weg terug erg veel apen aan het klooien in het bos. Mooi om deze dieren in het wild te observeren. (De japanners waren volgens mij meer onder de indruk van de miniscule vogeltjes).

Na Kamigochi in twee dagen naar mount Fuji gefietst die ik door de bewolking jammergenoeg niet heb kunnen bewonderen. Vandaag is het helder maar om nou 140km terug te fietsen?

Eergisteren ben ik in Tokyo aangekomen na een lange rit. Wat een stad is dit zeg. Door de stad racen op de fiets is leuk (al zijn de fietskoeriers lastig bij te houden met mijn zware tourfiets).

Blijf hier een weekje, zet nog wat op het blog als ik wat meer van de stad gezien heb...
Volgende week woensdag vlieg ik naar Vancouver, ticket in de pocket!

Japan / Level 1

Bij aankomst in Shimonoseki besluit ik maar te gaan fietsen en een plekje voor de tent te zoeken aangezien het hostel gesloten is. Veel dingen doen erg amerikaans aan al ben ik daar nog nooit geweest. 7eleven, Family Mart, McD en nog zo'n winkeltje met een letter K als logo die een petje en kaplaarzen draagt! Ik lag me een breuk als ik een burgertje bestel. Nog nooit heb ik iemand zoiets schraals als een Big Mac met zoveel respect zien behandelen. Buig voor de burger.

Ik fiets in 2 dagen naar Hiroshima waar ik Naoki ontmoet die ik op de boot heb leren kennen. In zijn wat claustrofobische huisje spelen we Super Mario. We bezoeken een traditioneel badhuis met veel kleine Japanse piemeltjes en eten sushi bij een lopende band restaurant. De historie van Hiroshima is bij iedereen wel bekend, toch is het museum over de A-bom de moeite waard.

Ik steek het eiland Honshu over naar de andere kust, deze is namelijk minder druk en heeft betere natuur. De San-in coast is erg mooi. Veel klimmen van de ene naar de andere baai met aparte rotsen en fijne strandjes waar het goed kamperen is.

Eergisteren begon het te regenen waardoor ik niet echt ver kwam. Normaal fiets ik wel door als het regent maar dit was niet echt aangenaam. Op zulke dagen is het wat eenzaam en vind ik troost bij de heerlijke warme blikjes instant koffie! Vandaag ben ik aangekomen in Kyoto waar ik eindelijk een goede fietsenwinkel heb gevonden (van mijn achterkrans was namelijk niet veel meer over).

Het kost hier wel duur in Japan. Fruit is niet te betalen en ook koffie en zuivel zijn prijzig. Wel goed te doen zijn de lokale paddestoelen en lente-ui enzo die de instant noodles wat opleuken!
Het bevalt me hier wel goed, het is overal groen en de temperatuur is prettig. Level 2 in Japan is nog wat onduidelijk maar ik zie wel hoe de wind waait. Arigato voor alle reacties! Foto's volgen nog.

Korea

Na een dagje relaxen en wat kleine voorbereidingen doen in Seoul ben ik maar weer op de fiets gestapt. Toch maar weer in m'n eentje aangezien Rob wat haast had om in Tokyo te raken en een stuk met de bus wou doen. Seoul is even omschakelen na 3 maanden China! Alles is erg westers en het is ook niet echt gebruikelijk om je troep op straat te gooien. Waar laat ik die sigarettenpeuk?

Ben in drie dagen naar de oostkust gereden over ongelofelijk steile bergjes en oneindig veel tunnels...

Na Sokcho ben ik langs de kust naar het zuiden gefietst. Echt een prachtige weg, deed me een beetje denken aan Nieuw Zeeland. Er groeien hier ook bomen en planten! Heb eigenlijk overal vrij gekampeerd, wat prima te doen is hier. Je dagritme veranderd wel wat en sta rond 6 uur op en ga vroeg naar bed.

De Koreanen zijn echt supertoffe mensen! Nadat ik mijn tentje in een bungalowpark had opgezet kon ik daar natuurlijk niet in slapen, het was immers veel te koud buiten. Bij de familie in het huisje was het erg warm en gezellig. Onderweg krijg je van alles toegestopt zoals; ginseng koekjes, veel koffie, een banaan, en energiedrankjes. Ik mocht zelfs bij de benzinepomp niet betalen nadat ik mijn brandstoffles had gevuld. Ze vragen erg veel, vooral hoe oud je bent en wat je werk is... mmm, geen werk is niet echt een gewenst antwoord dus ik zeg meestal graphic designer.

Vandaag heb ik me weer eens lekker stuk gefietst om de drukke stad Pusan binnen te rijden. Het verkeer in de steden is niet echt prettig, vooral de bussen en taxichauffeurs interesseerd het geen reet dat er ook iets bestaat als fietsen! Ook de verkeerslichten staan hier veel te lang op rood. Maar dat zijn kleinigheden in dit vriendelijke land.

Morgen pak ik de boot naar Shimonoseki in Japan. Ga nu een biertje drinken op de 10000km die ik vandaag bereikt heb!
